If you know us here at Excluded Fashion, you know we are all about making shopping quick, easy and fun for women of ALL shapes and sizes. And one of the best ways to start building a wardrobe is to build a capsule wardrobe.

Let me tell you from personal experience!

I decided to invest in a high-quality capsule wardrobe for fall last year and let me tell you… I didn’t have to buy ANYTHING new during winter and it saved me so much money and I never once felt like I was bored with my clothes!

Read on for me to convince you why capsule wardrobes are so important…

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe essentially is a wardrobe made up of staple pieces that you love to wear and can style multiple different ways. The purpose of a summer capsule wardrobe is to essentially… not walk into your closet and say “I have nothing to wear!”. A capsule wardrobes purpose is to give you options for many seasons without having to keep up with the trends every season. No only does it help you curate a wardrobe your proud of, but it helps you save money knowing you don’t have to constantly think of buying new clothes every time the temperature changes. It’s also a great way to feel like you’re being sustainable and helping the environment and no cost to you!

Tips on building a capsule wardrobe.

Don’t forget your current closet!

Before diving into shopping for new clothes, it is a must to look at what you already have! Spring cleaning is the perfect time to do this so you can look through your wardrobe, take stock of what you already have, what fits and what doesn’t, get rid of anything you won’t wear again and start fresh. If you’re looking to save money in this process, this is the most important step in the process that can either make or break your bank account, so make sure not to skip it!

Invest in quality

If you’re buying lower quality pieces for a capsule wardrobe then you are essentially defeating the point. It’s important to invest in good quality items so you can wear them for years to come. Example, why buy the $15 white tee off a fast fashion website when you know you’ll only get maybe 3, 4 washes out of it before the fabric starts to thin and you start to get yellow stains on the armpits? It’s well worth the investment into a good quality brand and buy a $75 tee knowing it’ll last you not 3-4 washes, but 3-4 years!

Basics rule

I tend to focus on basics when it comes to a capsule wardrobe, not just in fit, but in color too. I only buy neutrals for my capsule wardrobe because I know I can spice it up with color later on through accessories based on what’s trending for that season. It also gives me flexibility to mix and match these pieces together and I won’t have to worry about any of them clashing either.

Think for 2 seasons

Realistically, I agree with some of the critics out there on the fact you don’t need a capsule wardrobe for every season. I like to think of my capsule wardrobe in 2 parts.

  1. Spring and Summer capsule wardrobe

  2. Fall and Winter capsule wardrobe

That way you only need to address your closet twice a year and it’s also MUCH easier to find transition pieces in-between seasons if you think of it this way. That way there won’t be a ton of clean out when you transition into the process of next seasons capsule wardrobe process.

You have to love it

There’s no reason to buy a certain dress for your capsule wardrobe if you’re on the fence about it. When shopping for your capsule wardrobe, it’s imperative that you truly love the pieces you are buying because the intent is to wear them over and over again! So make sure the fit is right and the style is just what you want, because you don’t want to be in a situation where you buy something meant to last and you only wear it 2 times.

Speaking of loving it… it’s time to get to the best part!
